#OneRoomChallenge, Week Six: The Master Bedroom + Nursery Reveal | Design Confetti

Six weeks ago we started this round of the One Room Challenge. Six weeks ago I also happened to bring home my second child after a roller coaster of a pregnancy that had me confined to bed for much of it. While you might be questioning my sanity reading this, I can honestly say that that while there are plenty of things I might do “for the blog”- or at least with the blog in mind, I embraced this challenge as a chance to do all of the nesting I had not been able to do while pregnant. While this series may not have been as polished (and prompt) as past challenges, it was therapeutic to focus my creative energy on, and I love the results.

I set out to create a shared master bedroom/nursery because in true San Francisco style we’re a bit short on space. I wanted to create an environment that made room for baby while still feeling like a retreat for the adults, allowing us to take care of ourselves as we care for our new bundle (alongside the energetic two-year-old that adores him and also happens to reside in this household.) Self-care for me was investing in a beautiful diffuser, a weighted blanket you would never believe is a weighted blanket, soft linen sheets c/o Cultiver and some blackout curtains: throw in some white noise, and you have the recipe for a perfect nap. Never underestimate the restorative power of a good nap, especially in those hazy newborn days.

To keep the room feeling “grown-up” I brought in deep navy throughout the space, from the room-darkening linen curtains, to the pinstriped duvet and pillowcases c/o Cultiver, to the chunky knit Sheltered Co blanket and finally the peace flag handing over the dresser/changing table: one of my favorite touches as it references the fact that our son’s name means “peace.” Contrasting the navy are subtle touches of pink and green throughout against an otherwise neutral background. Hanging above the bassinet (the absolutely life-changing Snoo) is a weaving by Bay Area artist Meghan Shimek which was the original inspiration for the color scheme of the room and ties everything together.

Integrating all of the not-so-little baby things was the part that made me the most nervous (you can read all about that here), but with some planning, it came together pretty seamlessly. We picked up a Snoo bassinette second hand, lured in by both its good looks and the promise of more restful nights and it’s honestly delivered on both, I only wish there was a version that could convince my toddler to sleep longer stretches. We also inherited a DockATot which fits perfectly inside of the Snoo when it’s not in use. For a changing table, we cleared the top dresser drawer to house essentials like diapers and topped it with the sleek, easy to clean Keekaroo Peanut. Finally, we sourced the baskets seen on the bookshelves from the Container Store to create storage for the baby clothes, swaddles, towels and all of the other essentials while items he hasn’t grown into yet are stashed underneath the bed in flexible plastic storage bags for the time being.

Accessories are said to make the outfit, and I’m also a believer that they make the room. Because I haven’t been getting out too much- I repurposed what I could from around the house; got creative with some pieces from Amazon (the wood beads, branch, and large airplant were all Amazon scores); picked up a ton of affordable pieces from Target including the two table lamps; and shopped Society6 and Minted online for artwork that wouldn’t break the bank. To keep things baby and toddler proofed I made sure to put anything fragile or potentially dangerous out of reach on the higher shelves or mantel and used sturdy, kid-safe pieces on the lower ones.
