The Weekly Design Dispatch: Dyson, Tulips and What to Do When You Can't Go Out

Welcome to the weekly Design Dispatch; in it this week, we’re talking about how Dyson is disrupting hair tools (again), major brands that are addressing Coronavirus, what to do when you have to stay in. On a lighter note, it’s tulip season! Here’s where you can see the best blooms.

LOCAL INTEREST:

Tulip season is here, and while San Francisco's Flower Bulb day was canceled, you can still see them at the Queen Wihelmina Tulip Garden in Golden Gate Park or take a short trip to Filoli in Woodside, CA for a stroll around the garden which includes Sunken with over 5000 yellow tulips (admission is $22).

While the highly anticipated Vintage Fashion Fair in Alameda was canceled this weekend, you can still get your shopping fix with the new resale app Object Limited. The app is decidedly less thrift store chic and more serious vintage with the curated experience and price tags to match. We’re eyeing finds like this crochet top and ’50s beaded handbag. If you prefer to shop IRL, the next fair is slated to take place on October 16 and 17th.

Retailers have been impacted in a myriad of ways by Coronavirus with small businesses, unfortunately, taking the hardest hit while large stores’ shelves are cleared. Here are a few policies some of them are enacting to deal with the change: Starbucks has suspended its refill program and will no longer allow customers to use their own cups to minimize exposure. CVS is now offering free prescription delivery to customers and video visits through its Minute Clinic for $59 a call. Finally, Target is limiting the number of certain items one shopper can purchase to keep stores better stocked for customers.

DESIGN NEWS:

Dyson has already re-invented the way you dry your hair; now, they’re here for your flatiron. With the aptly named Corrale, the tool boasts flexible copper plates that mold to your hair, ensuring even heat distribution for better results in fewer passes, at lower temperatures. The brand claims this results in 50% less damage to hair. It also has a game-changing cordless design, making using the hot tool a lot easier to maneuver. The straightener rings in at a cool $500, meaning it’s not quite as easy on the wallet as it purportedly is on hair.

HGTV just announced the new show, Celebrity IOU with Drew and Jonathan of Property Brothers fame and a rotating cast of celebrities including Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, and Brad Pitt. The team will surprise people who have left an impact on their lives with a home renovation. The show premiers on HGTV April 13th.

This week on Design Confetti we shared a post on 200 ways you can entertain your kids at home, if you’re looking for a way to entertain yourself without leaving the house might we suggest our posts on  Bingable Shows for Fashion Lovers, and Bingeable Shows for Design Lovers. LISTEN:

The song we’ve been playing on repeat this week is Born Tired by Jhene Aiko; maybe it’s the catchy tune and the soothing melody of her voice that has us hooked, or perhaps it’s that we really are tired. Either way, her new album Chilombo is well worth a listen.

That concludes our weekly Design Dispatch. If there is anything you would like to add to the list, feel free to leave a comment below, and if you have a tip for a future column, feel free to drop us a line.
